The Story of Abdeslam HabibAllah: A Lifelong Commitment to Unity and Social
Cohesion
Abdeslam HabibAllah’s life is a testament to dedication, leadership, and an
unwavering commitment to fostering unity and integration across diverse
communities. Born and raised in Morocco, Abdeslam brought his rich cultural heritage
to South Africa, where he became a citizen and embarked on a remarkable journey
as a champion for social integration. Fluent in Arabic, English, and French, Abdeslam’s
ability to connect with people across cultural and linguistic divides has been central to
his mission of promoting social cohesion.
His academic foundation, built at the French Technical Institute of Banking (ITB),
where he earned diplomas in Marketing and Communication, equipped him with
valuable skills in leadership and strategic planning. However, it was his natural affinity
for people and his drive to build cohesive communities that would define his legacy.
Abdeslam’s leadership journey formally began in 2007 when he became Chairperson
of the Moroccan Association of South Africa, working to create a platform for Moroccan
nationals living in the country. Soon after, recognizing the need for broader
representation, he co-founded the African Diaspora Forum (ADF), an umbrella
organization advocating for African and Asian migrant communities in South Africa.
His leadership in the ADF, as both Founding Member and later as Chairman, solidified
his role as a tireless advocate for migrant integration.
His influence extended beyond the Moroccan and North African communities. In 2010,
he became Chairperson of the Union of Arab Community in South Africa, and by 2012,
he was leading the Migrant Community Board. Abdeslam’s leadership in these
organizations reflects his deep-seated belief in unity and collaboration as the solution
to the challenges faced by migrant communities in South Africa.
One of Abdeslam’s most significant contributions came in 2014 when he was elected
Organizing Secretary for the World Social Forum on Migration (WSFM). This landmark
event, hosted in South Africa, brought over 3,000 participants from around the globe,
providing a platform for dialogue on migration, integration, and the future of diverse
societies. His leadership in this forum was instrumental in fostering critical
conversations and advocating for the protection of migrant rights.
Beyond organizing global forums, Abdeslam has been deeply involved in social
cohesion at the grassroots level. He organized Social Cohesion Dialogues in 2014
and 2015, bringing together leaders, diplomats, and NGOs to promote unity between
South Africans and foreign nationals. His efforts extended to organizing soccer
tournaments that encouraged youth interaction across nationalities and were graced
by legendary players like Didier Drogba, amplifying the message of unity through
sport.
In recognition of his ongoing work, in 2020, Abdeslam was appointed a Social
Cohesion Advocate by South Africa’s Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture. In this
role, he has continued to champion integration, peace, and collaboration between
communities. His work with the City of Johannesburg’s Ward 58 Committee, where he
focuses on economic development, further highlights his commitment to not only
fostering social cohesion but also empowering migrant communities to thrive
economically.
Abdeslam’s impact is profound, rooted in his belief that diverse societies can flourish
when built on a foundation of mutual respect and understanding. His tireless efforts to
reduce xenophobia, promote dialogue, and create opportunities for migrants to
integrate have made him a true champion of social cohesion.
As the Chairman of the ADF, Abdeslam’s vision for a more inclusive and united South
Africa continues to inspire those around him. His life’s work stands as a powerful
reminder of the difference one individual can make in promoting Social cohesion and
unity within a diverse society to live together in harmony for a common future. His
dedication to social change and community development makes him an exemplary
candidate for the recognition of Social Integration Champion at the AIIA 2024.
